We'll have a stand at the Over 50s Show in the RDS this weekend from Fri 16th - Sun 18th October 2009. Everyone is welcome to attend and see the bikes up close. You can even have a go and see what they're like. This is a great opportunity to experience our bikes in the flesh and ask any questions you may have. We hope to see you there!

Over 50's Show, Limerick. 12th & 13th September

Great News! We will have a stand at the Over 50's Show in Limerick next weekend. The show will start on Saturday the 12th of September and end the following day on Sunday the 13th of September in the UL Arena. At the show you will have the chance to see and test the bikes as well have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have for one of our representatives. It's the ideal opportunity if you are interested in the bikes but haven't had a chance to see them yet. Bring anyone that may be interested and remember our bikes aren't just for older people. Many of our customers are commuters who are just plain sick of traffic and buses and paying for parking and lets face it, everyone could do with cycling without the hills!!!! Our blog has been in place for over 2 months now, thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post a comment or contacted us as a result of reading it.

We have some news to announce with regards to national bike week starting 14/06/2009 so please check back here again soon.

In the meantime we have received some comments that may be of interest. The first is from a satisfied KenBay customer who writes :

I just wanted to add my experience .... I have been using the ladies KenBay electric bike since last November. I am a complete convert. I travel about 4 miles to and 4 miles from work so absolutely no excuse for driving there and back for the past 15 years. But the notion of cycling - up hill, all the way home then collecting kids, making dinner, supervising homework etc etc on top of the uphill climb was just too much to contemplate. My electric bike has completely solved the uphill climb, I am fitter and have lost weight. I am also saving a fortune in parking (which on a bad week could run to €70-€80) so the bike has pretty much paid for itself in parking alone. I would recommend it to anyone who has had their fill of commuting. The "rent a bike" scheme is a great idea to give it a go and see if it is for you. For me I haven't looked back since the day I got it.

It is great to get this type of feedback !!

We also had an interesting question from Jim..

There appears to be quite a lot of weight on the rear wheel, between the battery, motor, etc. This increases the chance of a buckled wheel if you hit a pothole, or jump a kerb. If that happened, what would have to be replaced and at what cost? For example, can you replace the wheel alone and transfer the motor, or is it all one unit?Jim

Electric Bikes Poll Results

In our first ever visitor poll we asked should there be a contact form on the Contact Us page on our main KenBay electric bikes website. Thanks to everyone who took part, the results are fairly conclusive : 3 people would fill in their details and 3 would not. So that is it then - we definately have a draw!

April saw another increase in the numbers of people looking for information about electric bikes in Ireland - certainly more are aware of the new Cycle to Work scheme, but of course the change in season makes it easier to get out on a bike as well.

Cycle To Work Scheme

From 1 January 2009, the provision of bicycles and associated safety equipment by employers to employees who agree to use the bicycles to cycle to work will be treated as a tax exempt benefit-in-kind. The exemption may only apply once in every 5 year period in respect of any employee.

There will be a limit on value of such purchases of €1000 for each employee. This scheme may also be implemented via salary sacrifice arrangements, whereby an employee agrees to forego part of his/her salary to cover the costs associated with the purchase of the bicycle and associated safety equipment. Where such salary sacrifice arrangements are implemented, they must be completed over a maximum period of 12 months.

The taxes relieved include;

Employee tax at marginal rates

Employee PRSI and health levy

Employer PRSI.

Participation is voluntary for employers.

Qualifying safety equipment

Cycle helmets which conform to European standard EN 1078

Bells and bulb horns Lights, including dynamo packs

Mirrors and mudguards to ensure riders visibility is not impaired

Cycle clips and dress guards Panniers, luggage carriers and straps to allow luggage to be safely carried

Locks and chains to ensure cycle can be safely secured

Pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant to allow for minor repairs

Reflective clothing along with white front reflectors and spoke reflectors

Example

Employee:

Price of KenBay electric bike: €1200

Emplyee pays: €200

Employer pays: €1000
Employee pays back €1000 through salary sacrifice from GROSS wage.
Employee saves: PRSI (6%): €60 PAYE (41%): €410
Cost of bike to employee: €1200 - €470 = €730

Additional Savings
€200 on employee car parking spaces

Who knows how much on public parking throughout the year?

Hi all, KenBay Electric Bikes will have a stand at the Ideal Homes exhibition in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal this weekend. We will be at W20 where anyone can come see the bikes and ask questions. We'll be near an exit door so we encourage people to go outside and test the bikes to see how they perform. We always have a very positive response at shows like this because people really are amazed at how much power the motor provides and how quiet and discreet the motor is. New pages have been added to include clarification on the laws regarding electric bikes and information on the new Cycle to Work scheme.
